It can be really difficult to know how to support someone who is going through a tough time. Maybe a friend is struggling with a difficult health diagnosis or a family member has experienced a huge loss. Sometimes, in our desperation to be present and helpful, we can say some really unhelpful things. Because we are all human and have our own very human responses to upsetting events, we can make everything about ourselves in our efforts to be selfless.
